SUPERINTENDENT’S MESSAGE

Dear Salt Lake City School District community,

I am deeply grateful for the strength and care of our Salt Lake City School District community. In tragic moments like last week’s shooting, I am reminded how fortunate we are to be surrounded by educators, counselors, families, and neighbors who show up for one another with compassion and professionalism.

I would like to extend special thanks to our teachers, staff, and school counselors. Their daily work goes far beyond academics. They create safe, supportive spaces where students are seen, heard, and cared for.

During challenging times, kindness and connection matter more than ever. I encourage us all, as neighbors, parents, and community members, to look out for one another, to listen with empathy, to treat each other with dignity, and to offer care when it is needed. Our strength as a community comes from the way we support each other, especially when things feel difficult.

Thank you for your continued partnership and trust. Together, we will continue to care for our students and one another with compassion and understanding.

With gratitude and care,

Elizabeth Grant, Ph.D.
Superintendent
Salt Lake City School District

EXCELLENCE IN ACTION

Congratulations to the educators in our district who have recently earned or renewed their National Board Certification! They are:

New Certification:

·        Cara Cerise, Rose Park Elementary
·        Ulli Dannhauer, East High
·        Karen Kemp-Schultz, Meadowlark Elementary

·        Brandy Valdez, Rose Park

Renewed Certification:
·        Lindsay Gish, Indian Hills Elementary
·        Kari Johnson, West High

Students taught by Board-certified teachers learn more, and Salt Lake City School District has more National Board Certified Teachers than any other district in Utah, even in comparison to districts that are larger than ours. We are grateful for the work and professionalism of our teachers. This achievement reflects a deep commitment to excellence in teaching and student success.

UVU For the Love of Reading Award
Congratulations to Bryant Baird, Ensign Elementary teacher librarian and recipient of the UVU "For the Love of Reading" Literacy Champion award! His work helps students enjoy reading and supports teachers every day.

Our district is proud to be one of only two districts in Utah with certified teacher librarians in every elementary school, helping students build strong reading skills.

FINANCIAL REPORTING AWARDS

The district’s Business Office recently earned the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting for its Annual Comprehensive Financial Report. This is the 48th consecutive year the district has received this recognition from the Government Finance Officers Association. Salt Lake City School District has earned this award longer than any other government agency in the state, reflecting our strong financial stewardship and leadership.

The district has also been awarded the prestigious Certificate of Excellence in Financial Reporting from the Association of School Business Officials (ASBO). This honor recognizes school districts that uphold the highest standards of financial reporting and transparency. The district has earned this award for 46 consecutive years.

APPRENTICESHIP OPPORTUNITIES

Did you know Salt Lake City School District leads the state in the number of apprenticeship opportunities for students?

Applications are now open for the TRAC (Talent Ready Apprenticeship Connection) Manufacturing Apprenticeship Program for the 2026–2027 school year. Students can apply in their junior year. If they are selected, they start working as apprentices during their senior year, spending half their time taking high school classes and the other half learning on-the-job skills while getting paid . The apprenticeship continues for two more years as students continue working and earn an associate degree, paid for by our partner companies, at Salt Lake Community College.

Students and families are encouraged to learn more at the Parent & Guardian Information Night on Thursday, January 22, from 6:00–7:30 PM at Stadler Rail

ACE MENTOR PROGRAM

Is your student interested in architecture, construction, or engineering? Encourage them to join the ACE mentoring program, where they will have the opportunity to learn more about career opportunities from professionals.

This is a 17-week after-school program where 9th-12th grade students will learn from professionals, work on fun projects and hands-on activities, go on office and site tours, and have scholarship and internship opportunities. Last year, over $20,000 in scholarships and several paid summer work experiences were awarded.

The program runs every Thursday, today through May 7, 2026. The kick-off meeting is today after school in room 206 at West High School, but it’s OK if your student misses today’s session. Students can join the program at any time. See the attached poster for more information.

ILLNESS GUIDELINES

It’s that time of year again when temperatures drop, and many students may get sick. Typically, the number of students diagnosed with a cold, the flu, or COVID increases during the winter. Because of this we wanted to send a reminder to all families that if your student is sick, please keep them home.

The symptoms for these many illnesses can be very similar: cough, sore throat, headache, runny nose, and fever. If your student is experiencing any of these symptoms, please take them to your family doctor or a local health clinic so they can be tested and receive proper treatment. You can also read our Illness Guidelines on our website. They are available in several languages.

Our custodians are working hard to clean and sanitize our schools every day, specifically focusing on high-touch areas and classrooms. Thank you for helping us keep our schools safe and healthy.

REMINDER: CALENDARS FOR THE NEXT THREE YEARS ARE NOW AVAILABLE

Last week, the Board of Education approved the district calendars for the 2026-27, 2027-28, and 2028-29 school years. As part of the calendar process, three options for each year were created, sent out to schools for review by employees and school community councils, and then schools voted for their favorite option. The board reviewed those votes and then approved the calendars with the most votes.

To find the printable calendars in English, go to the Calendars webpage, scroll down to “Printable Calendars,” and click on the year you want to see. (We will have PDFs available soon in other languages spoken by SLCSD families and will send another email once those translations have been uploaded.)
